HORSE SLAUGHTER & Prairie Hope Foal Rescue

Horses waiting to be killed at Dallas Crown.
This plant is now closed but our horses are still being exported.

When thinking of North Dakota people dream of big ranch's and open pastures of cattle and horses. This is true but whats wrong with this picture is that horses are a disposable commodity here in ND.
On any given auction day of any given month you will find kill buyers snapping up half the horses that are sent to the auction to be sent to slaughter houses in Canada. Why are people here breeding horses with no concern about their future?

To date just since moving to North Dakota we have pulled 4 foals and a pony from under the kill buyers.

Fionna was rescued from the auction where the kill buyers wanted her

I cant believe people treat foals like the kill buyers dirty little secret.
Ive seen them disposed of just because they where born to mares headed to killing pens or sent to feed lots to fatten and be sent to killing pens themself later on.
Last month one was born in the kill buyers pen and the order was to get rid of it. The poor thing was born in a blizzard with no shelter. Its ears froze off and dispite efforts made to rescue the mare and foal the kill buyer would not sell the mare. One of the yard workers took the foal home to bottle feed and mama headed to Canada.
This has got to stop!

Dallas and Lakota are 2 more foals we bought at the auction and rehomed

Dallas was rescued from the auction as a foal

Lakota was the last horse in the sale.
The kill buyers where the only ones who wanted him.

This registered AQHA filly was only 3 1/2 months old when we bought her at the auction for $10
She was given a home by the owner of her great grandsire Reno's Replacement

$10 also saved this QH filly from the feedlots. She was only about 4 months old
She now has a loving family with young children who adore her.

Note:The night before the July 08 auction something drew me to go check out the horses there.
Sadly one of the horses was Cheyenne's full sister, Zip's Carbon Copy.
She was brought in without her papers by her "forever" owner who had her less then a year and was sold as a grade horse for $130 because he had not bothered to bring in her paperwork but simpley copies, as good as trash to the auction house.
She was one of the lucky ones who found a home that day instead of going to the kill buyers

Freedom
Bought at auction from under kill buyers for just $45
Freedom's dam was also at the auction and was a Reg AQHA mare whos bloodlines included Doc O Lena.
At first I saw this fantastic looking mare and wishing I had the money to pull her when I saw Freedom poke her head out from behind her mother.
A clone! I knew I could help this one!
Freedom isnt registered but someone took the time to halter break her, work with her feet and tie her.
When we went to pick her up she had impailed herself on ?? and had a deep gash on her chest.
Since then its healed and shes doing great
Shes very easy to work with and loves baths!
Freedome is ready for a new home, please email me if your interested

Fancy, a welsh pony that only the kill buyers wanted.
She came home with us and is now in a forever home.

PRAIRIE HOPES FOAL RESCUE

Thank you Cary,Sheri,George,Maeve and Bill!
Together we have started a foal rescue named Prairie Hopes, where it is our goal to pull foals from auctions and homes where they are unwanted.
We will then find them loving homes for a small fee for their care, thus giving us a small income to take care of even more babies.
In Aug 08 we pulled 7 foals!!

As I said Im involved in many rescue groups and efforts, including a member or Team Lay Me down, a team of horse lovers at Pure Thoughts Rescue that work together to support and sponcer a foal in need in honor of the ones who havent made it.

Can you please spare just $1 to help rescue and feed these poor horses?
Listed below are some of the rescues I support besides our own. If you would please donate to one of them, or any other equine rescue then rest assure that your money will be used to save these wonderfull animals.

You might ask, what can a dollar do?
If everyone who reads this donates just $1 then it will buy a bag of grain, a bale of hay or help pay a vet bill. Perhaps it will help pay to get a horse out of the killing pens or auction yards. Its a small price to pay for knowing you helped save a life.
