Rainbow running with Fionna as a yearling

My son Brandon and Fey

Fey when we got her at about 6 months old.

When thinking of North Dakota people dream of big ranch's and open pastures of cattle and horses. This is true but what’s wrong with this picture is that horses are a disposable commodity here in ND.
On any given auction day of any given month you will find kill buyers snapping up half the horses that are sent to the auction to be sent to slaughter houses in Canada. Why are people here breeding horses with no concern about their future?

In December 07 we went to the local horse auction knowing well that I'd come home in tears and maybe with another horse. Horses where going for under $500 for fully broke ranch horses, $200 for loose horses and foals where $5 and $10!!!

Fionna looks like a paint/draft type cross

Getting her home wasn't fun, she reared in the trailer and got stuck half way out of the half tailgate with a security bar and had her front legs hanging out over the top. Someone pulled beside us about the same time yelling your horse is climbing out of the trailer!

Being on Main Street we where able to pull into the gas station that just happen to be right there and get her untangled, checked over and to cover the tailgate completely with a tarp.
She rode home quietly and stepped out like nothing had ever happened.
She’s coming along great! I was able to find out that she’s only about 6 months old and had been traded off several times already making us her 4th home in 2 months!!

Fay is a beautiful black and white toverio paint that looks like she has some draft in her.

I was able to get in touch with the person who brought her into the auction and discovered that at only about 6 months she had been taken from her dam and sold to a dealer, who traded her to another dealer, traveled from the southern end of South Dakota to Mandan North Dakota and ended up at Kist horse auction
No wonder she freaked in the trailer!

Fionna has been with us for 6 weeks now. For the first month we just let her get used to the idea humans are good.
The other horses think they are pocket ponies and always come running when they see us. It didn’t take long for her to realize that mom brings horse cookies and all you have to do to get one is to come and ask.

This month we have started halter training her.. slowly. Did I mention its the dead of winter in North Dakota? lol
She’s coming along great as long as she thinks its her idea and she’s quiet the thinker. It’s nice to watch her take a step forward then stand and think about it for a moment then take a few more steps.

update:

This summer is Fay’s second year
We decided to have her started by a "trainer". I'm guilty. I let my wallet throw my good sense out the window and I did not check as deeply into the trainer I hired as I should have.
He was rough, abusive and did not want to listen to me. Needless to say he walked but still, it should never have happened. I stress, Do your homework a bad trainer can ruin your horse.
This same trainer set Cheyenne back to the start and caused her to loose her foal.
I'm glad I was there that day, it was his last day around our horses.

I’m glad to say I have her in the hands of a good trainer now and she has been working under saddle very well for 30 rides.
Even after her experience she was quiet and willing. She never offered to buck but only wanted to please her rider.

She will contue her training in the spring as a 3 year old.
